Slime Mold in the House: What It Is and What to Do

Slime mold in the house is not true mold — it's myxomycetes. Here's how to identify it, why it appears indoors, and when to test for real mold.

Slime mold in the house is almost never what people assume it is. It looks like mold, it sits on damp surfaces like mold, and it shows up in basements, near houseplants, and around HVAC closets. But it is not fungus. The bright-yellow blob on your mulch bed or the grey skin on a damp piece of trim is myxomycetes, a separate group of organisms in their own kingdom, not in Fungi. The species most people see indoors is Fuligo septica, nicknamed "dog vomit slime mold" for obvious reasons.

Slime mold is generally low risk for healthy adults, and it does not eat wood, drywall, or insulation. What it does do is signal a damp organic surface, the same conditions that grow real mold. This guide explains what slime mold actually is, why it appeared inside, how to tell it apart from true mold, and when a finding is worth a professional inspection.

What slime mold actually is

Slime mold is the common name for myxomycetes, single-celled organisms that aggregate into a visible mass during their reproductive stage. They are not Fungi. They feed on bacteria and decaying organic matter rather than on the building material itself, and they move slowly across surfaces in search of food. Telling them apart from true mold is a core part of a lab-backed mold inspection.

Three things make slime mold look like mold to a homeowner:

  • It appears suddenly. A clean spot one morning becomes a yellow or grey patch by afternoon.
  • It clings to damp surfaces such as bark mulch, potted-plant soil, damp wood, and the underside of leaking trim.
  • After it fruits, it dries out and releases dark spores that look like soot.

The most common indoor species are Fuligo septica (yellow to tan, sometimes pinkish), Physarum polycephalum (yellow, vein-like networks), and various Stemonitis species (rust-colored tufts on damp wood). University extension publications and the USDA Forest Service classify these as harmless to plants and to building materials in nearly all residential settings.

Why slime mold appears inside

Indoor slime mold almost always traces to a damp organic source brought in from outside. The most common entry points are mulch on a shoe, soil in a houseplant pot, or damp firewood stacked too close to a heat source. The organism was already there, dormant; the conditions inside woke it up.

The common indoor sources we see in our inspectors' field notes:

  • Mulch tracked in on shoes or pet paws. Bark mulch in landscaped beds is the textbook habitat for Fuligo septica.
  • Potted-plant soil that stays wet. Overwatered indoor plants are a frequent culprit, especially in soil with bark or coconut coir.
  • Damp wood near a moisture source. Leaking window sills, untreated baseboards behind a slow plumbing drip, or firewood stacked indoors.
  • HVAC closet condensation. A condensate line drip onto wood subfloor or organic insulation.
  • Crawlspaces and basements with high humidity. Anywhere relative humidity stays above 70% for days at a stretch.

The pattern is the same in each case: organic material plus standing moisture plus warmth. Remove any one of those three and slime mold cannot complete its life cycle indoors.

How to identify slime mold (vs real mold)

Slime mold looks like a wet, slimy blob, often yellow, orange, white, or grey, that shifts shape or relocates over a few hours. True mold is fuzzy, powdery, or velvety, sticks to one spot, and grows by extending hyphae into the material it sits on. The fast visual test: if it looks wet and gooey, suspect slime mold; if it looks dry and fuzzy, suspect true mold.

Two other tells: slime mold dries to a brittle, crusty texture once it fruits, while true mold remains soft when disturbed. And slime mold typically appears outdoors on mulch first, then inside on a tracked-in source, so a yellow blob on your patio mulch the same week one shows up inside is a strong identification clue.

Is slime mold dangerous?

Slime mold itself is generally considered low risk for healthy adults. It does not produce the mycotoxins associated with some Stachybotrys species, and the CDC's overview of mold does not list myxomycetes as a household health hazard. The spores released after fruiting can, however, trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in sensitive people, much like pollen.

Two caveats worth stating plainly. First, anyone with diagnosed mold allergy, asthma, or immune-suppression should treat any spore source, slime mold included, with care, and direct medical questions to a clinician rather than to a home inspector. Second, slime mold's presence is a signal. The EPA's mold and moisture guidance is clear that the underlying issue in nearly every indoor-mold situation is moisture, and the same moisture supporting slime mold can support true mold on the wood, drywall, or insulation under it.

So the organism itself is mostly harmless. The conditions it points to are not.

How to remove slime mold safely

Removal is straightforward in most cases. Slime mold sits on surfaces rather than digging into them, which means you can scoop it off without damaging what is underneath. Wear gloves and an N95 mask if you have a known mold or pollen allergy.

  1. Ventilate the room first. Open windows and run a fan. This reduces airborne spore concentration while you work.
  2. Scoop the slime into a sealed bag. A plastic scraper or a stiff piece of cardboard works. Drop it straight into a trash bag and tie it off.
  3. Wipe the surface with soapy water. Plain dish soap is enough; no bleach needed for slime mold itself. Dry the surface completely.
  4. Fix the moisture source. Move overwatered plants, refresh waterlogged mulch, repair a slow leak, or run a dehumidifier in the affected room.
  5. Monitor for a week. If it returns, you have an unresolved moisture problem rather than a slime mold problem.

Skip aggressive scrubbing or pressure washing. Both aerosolize spores without making the situation better.

When to test for real mold

Slime mold on its own does not warrant a mold inspection. The conditions that brought it in, however, are the same conditions that grow true mold on the wood, subfloor, or drywall behind a damp surface. The triggers that move the situation from "wipe it up" to "get it tested":

  • A persistent musty smell that does not clear after you remove the slime mold
  • Visible water damage on a wall, ceiling, or floor
  • A recent leak, flood, or roof-water event that took longer than a day to dry
  • Unexplained respiratory or sinus symptoms in the room
  • Furry, fuzzy, or powdery growth alongside the slime — that part is real mold

What to do next

A slime mold finding by itself is a wipe-it-up problem. The conditions behind it are sometimes a bigger problem. Moisture is the one controllable factor.
